ITINERARY FOR OUT WEST ROADTRIP!!!

Do you want to plan a road-trip to the beautiful western United States to see the mountains of Colorado, Utah, and Arizona, but have no idea where to start? Then this is for you! You don’t have to open one travel book or click on any other link, because I’ve already done it for you! Scroll down to get a full guide for a beautiful and easy out west road-trip that you’ll remember for the rest of your life!

Spring break of a lifetime!

There are two things I love most in the world: mountains and roadtrips. Waking up in a tent and seeing the sun rise over the mountains, drinking in that fresh air and hearing the birds singing; the thrill of not knowing what you’re getting into, getting up at 5 and driving, eating buckets of animal crackers and drinking crap gas station coffee… there’s nothing like it. Naturally, then, for the spring break of my sophomore year of college, I had to hit the road and drive to the objectively best mountains in the country: the mountains of Utah and Colorado!

I somehow talked three of my best friends into waking up at 4 am on a Friday morning and driving 32 hours to Arizona from Athens, Georgia! I think that we pretty much nailed it. Four broke college kids driving across the country living off of protein bars and quesadillas!

All that to say, if you’re looking for the perfect, insane, exhausting, yet thrilling week (and two days) of your life, this trip is for you.

Disclaimer:

This trip is not for the weak of heart. There is a LOT of driving, a LOT of early mornings, and a LOT of hiking. I seriously would not have it any other way, but you better gather all your energy and spontaneity and get ready to rumble.

Itinerary

I’m going to show you guys my itinerary and add in a few things that I wish we had done (or would have done if time allowed!) I’m also including this map below showing where we started and where we stayed!

DAY 1:

Wake up bright and early. this depends on where you’re coming from, but when we came from Athens, we left our house at 5:15 and drove a straight shot to Ennis, TX to stay with some family friends.

DAY 2:

Leave Texas EARLY! We left around 7 a.m. but for sure could’ve left a little earlier. We drove from Ennis to Carlsbad Cavern National Park. It was SO COOL! We spent around 2 hours walking through the caves. I 100% recommend this. It was the most awe-inspiring part maybe of the whole trip!

Drive from Carlsbad Caverns to Cloudcroft, NM. Stay in Cloudcroft Lodge in Lincoln National Forest!

  • TIP: Make sure you have gas before entering the national forest! Also try to enter with plenty of sunlight left!

DAY 3:

Hop out of bed around 7 a.m. Hit up the Burro Street Bakery just 15 minutes away from the lodge! William the baker told us all about what to do if we hit ice, if an elk ran into our car, or if we saw a bear. Shoutout William! You rock.

  • Fun Fact: on the way from Cloudcroft to Las Cruces, you pass this random military base museum that is worth stopping off at! It’s called White Sands Military Base. Go check it out if you have some time!

Drive to White Sand Dune National Park! We ran around in the sand, sledded down the dunes, and then laid in the sun for about an hour (best part).

  • TIP: Buy a sled and wax from the park store. You can also return the sled and get money back!

We stayed in Phoenix with a friend that night. For this night, either camp or stay in a hotel!

DAY 4: SEDONA HIKE DAY!

We woke up in Phoenix and went to a coffeeshop and bakery to hang out and chill for a bit. Definitely hang out in Phoenix for an hour or two! Try to go downtown and find a cool café! There’s also a really incredible farmer’s market in Phoenix on Saturdays!

After exploring Phoenix, drive through the beautiful Arizona mountains to Sedona! Stop and take a picture of the gigantic cacti on the way there! This is one of the coolest drives, so be sure to look out your window!

After meeting up with a few of our Grand Canyon University friends, we did Soldier’s Pass hike which was AWESOME!

It’s a pretty easy hike that passes lots of cool little areas. First, you pass Devil’s Kitchen, which is a giant sinkhole. Then you go by the Seven Sacred Pools; this is a neat spot where there are seven little water holes that connect as they go down a big rock hill. Super cool and definitely worth stopping by. Then as you keep walking through the insanely cool mountains and rock structures, you eventually end up at these caves that you can climb up into! You’ll probably see lots of people crawling up the right side of the cave and up into an overlook! Epic picture spot.

If you would rather do a different hike, here are some of the others that I found.

  • Munds Wagon Trail
  • Cathedral Rock Trail
  • Subway Cave
  • Birthing Cave
  • Fun fact: Blue McDonald’s! Sedona has the only blue McDonald’s in the world! It’s a super fun place to stop and take a picture by!

After playing in Sedona all day, drive on over to Dead Horse Ranch State Park and camp! Make sure you have time to set up camp and make dinner! This is truly (I think) one of the best parts of road-trips and camping in general… eating food around the fire, playing cards, and laughing.

If you need campsite meal recommendations, head on over to one of my MEALS ON WHEELS posts!

DAY 5: GRAND CANYON / HORSESHOE BEND!

The Grand Canyon is iconic (duh). We didn’t get to spend a ton of the day here because we were on a super time crunch. However, I have been to the Grand Canyon before this, so I’m going to hit you with by best tips and advice.

  • Where to go: South Rim of the Grand Canyon
    • There’s a ton of parking and really easy access to the canyon, along with a gift shop and restrooms.
  • Your hike: Bright Angel Hike
    • Probably the most popular hike in the canyon
    • You can hike down and turn around whenever you want!
  • TIP! WATER WATER WATER!
  • You can take a shuttle around part of the rim if you’re feeling tired and want to look out your window!
  • It’s really easy and fun to just walk around part of the South rim by the gift shop! It’s incredible and easy on your legs.

Drive to Horseshoe Bend!

  • TIP: 1.3 miles roundtrip from the parking lot to Horseshoe Bend!
  • $10 per vehicle to enter

Pick up pizza at Dominoes nearby and head to Lone Rock Primitive Campground!

THIS IS THE BEST CAMPSITE OF THE WHOLE TRIP! I last minute discovered it on an app called The Dyrt! It was so beautiful with the most incredible sunset and a beautiful beach. There are bathrooms (no sinks or water though). You can drive right up to the end of the hill by the beach and set up camp! It’s only $14 a night and 100% worth it!!!

DAY 6: ZION

ZION NATIONAL PARK IS THE COOLEST PLACE ON EARTH!!!!

Seriously, there is simply no comparison. This was my favorite day by a mile.

Your hike today: ANGEL’S LANDING! Technically, this is one of the most dangerous hikes in the country; but on the flip side, it’s on the list of the top day hikes in the world. So, all in all, I think it cancels out. Seriously though, if you are careful and watch your step, you will be totally fine! I climbed all the way to the top and sat there for an hour without seeing another soul!!! Surreal!

  • TIP: If there is ANY snow or ice at all, you HAVE to have spikes for your shoes. It really is the different between safety and danger when you’re climbing 90 degrees up a snow covered rock.
  • TIP: You have to get a permit for this hike. I applied for mine about 2 months in advance. It was really cheap (like $6), but it would devastating to get to the trailhead and be turned away!

Your second hike: if you’ve already mastered Angel’s Landing and still feeling full of energy, try Emerald’s Pool hike! Nothing compares to Angel’s Landing, but it’s a short and easy hike with some beautiful views!

Go set up your campsite next. We stayed at Watchman’s campsite in Zion. I booked this campsite for around $30 around 2 months before. This was one of my top places I’ve camped. There are friendly deer all around that walk right up to your campsite. The sun changes the color of the giant rock formations that lie all around your campsites. As the sun goes down and the sky turns brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple, the huge rocks/mountains turn bright red! It’s insane. Worth the $30.

  • TIP: if you’re by the campsite, you can exit the part and drive right down the road to a store where they sell firewood for $7 a bundle! It’s not camping without a fire, so I definitely recommend this.

Your third hike: Zion Canyon Overlook Trail. If you get more hanging around your campsite, drive about 15 minutes to the Overlook Trailhead and go on this super short hike (1 mile out and back) and watch the sun set over the whole canyon! I did this hike the first time I ever went to Zion a few years ago, and a few days after, Miley Cyrus posted a picture in the same spot. So if you want to twin with both me and Miley, for sure go conquer this hike.

DAY 7: ARCHES

I had never been to Arches National Park before and honestly wasn’t expecting much. However, I am pleased to say that Arches BLEW my mind!

You have two hikes today!

Your first hike: Delicate Arch. This hike is the most popular hike and iconic in general. It’s about 3 miles roundtrip.

Your second hike: Double O. This hike is SO INCREDIBLE! You will feel like you’re on top of the world.

  • Tip: It’s not super well marked, so I recommend downloaded a version of the map on your phone to stay on track. This was my second favorite hike of the whole trip!
  • WHAT I WISH I DID!
    • One of my biggest regrets was not applying for campsites and permits for Arches in time! If you can, book a campsite in Devil’s Garden in Arches. It’s awesome and beautiful and I’m so sad I didn’t get to stay!
    • My other regret was not applying for a permit to hike the Fiery Furnace hike in Arches! There’s an overlook on the park map that we stopped off at, and it’s absolutely beautiful. however, if you have the chance, apply for this permit EARLY and do this hike!
  • Tip: It is HOT! Wear sunscreen, drink water, and wear a tank top that you can strip down to if needed.

DAY 8: CANYONLANDS (Friday) OR BRYCE

Here is where the trip takes a little turn. We ended up skipping Bryce and canyon lands and heading straight home. I really think this next part is determined by your level of exhaustion. I felt like I could’ve kept going without a doubt, but my group was a little concerned about getting back Sunday night and starting school the next morning, which led to us going home a day early. However, if you’re still pumped up on that Utah mountain air energy, then head on over to Canyonlands for the time of your life.

DAY 9: BOOK IT HOME! BYE MOUNTAINS!
