Norway! This incredible, gorgeous, expensive country absolutely blew my mind. Other than Iceland, I have never seen more breathtaking nature, greener grass, or fascinating roads winding through the towering mountains. Every time someone asks me for a trip recommendation, I will immediately say Norway. However, unless you bring the right clothes and gear, you will have zero fun. No fun at all. You will freeze and be wet and miserable. However, I have compiled a master packing list for Norway of the things that I brought or that I wish that I had bought.
The nice thing about Norway is that everyone is really there to hike. You don’t need to bring really anything fancy or cute since everyone is pretty much in hiking clothes. If you’re spending extended time in Oslo, however, I would bring a few more nicer outfits for walking around, going to dinner, etc. since it is much more of a city vibe. Enjoy your packing list for Norway!

Insider One Day Budget Itinerary for Oslo

Hiking Clothes
- Joggers
- For walking around, exploring
- Rain pants
- A must have. There are days that you will either be hiking in the rain or be surprised by the rain, and without these you will be wet and cold and miserable. I linked some great ones below.
- Hiking pants
- I brought my Outdoor Voices RecTrecks, but you can also get some water resistant quick dry pants off of Amazon.
- Long sleeve athletic shirts
- Athletic shirts/tank tops
- 2 pairs of athletic shorts
- You’ll be surprised by random hot days, or maybe stripping down to shorts if you get hot hiking.
- Warm hiking socks
- A MUST HAVE! Good hiking socks that won’t give you blisters with your shoes

Jackets
SOOOOO important obviously. Even in the summer in Norway, it can be SO cold. Make sure all of these are quality with no rips or holes.
- Fleece
- Puffer
- Rainjacket
- Warm sweatshirt for sleeping
Warmth
I was such an idiot for not bringing gloves or a hat or anything of the sort. I included some pictures of us freezing to death just to emphasize this point. Please bring the below items.
- Gloves
- Scarf
- Hat or a gator for your ears, neck, and head

Shoes
- Waterproof hiking boots
- A must. You need to make sure that these are broken in before you go. I definitely prefer a more “boot” structure to support my ankles and make sure no dirt and rocks get into my shoes. I linked the ones I recommend below.
- Tennis shoes
- For walking around towns, etc.
- Shower shoes / water shoes
- If you’re staying in hostels, these are great to have to avoid stepping in nasty showers. Also, depending on the weather, there are some gorgeous beaches that you can explore; you don’t want your tennis shoes getting wet!
- I linked the ones I LOVE and bring everywhere; they’re cute enough to wear with a dress or cute outfit, and they also work in the shower and on the beach!
Other Clothes
- Jeans
- 1-2 nice tops
- Spikes for shoes
- If you are planning on hiking in snow or ice, you MUST have these. They attach right onto your hiking boots or shoes so that you don’t fall or slip. Definitely one of my best purchases.
- Bathing suit(s)
- 2-3 t shirts
- Small umbrella
- Rain cover for backpack
- This is a lifesaver. It’s basically always raining in Norway, and if you have a backpack with all your clothes on it, you’re toast if everything gets soaked. Grab one of these to put over your backpack to protect it from the rain!

Other
- Quick dry towel
- For the swimming/sauna-ing you’ll be doing, you need a towel that will dry quickly and is small; you don’t want to be hauling around a sopping wet heavy towel!
- Day pack
- For hikes, day trips, etc.
- Sunglasses
- Snacks
- Any snacks you can bring are a plus, since everything in Norway is sooo expensive.
Don’t Just Take My Word For It! Tips From Friends
After exploring Norway, I asked a few friends who came with me (and those who had gone before) what they would’ve done differently…
Maggie:
- Good layers
- Good hiking boots are a must
- Toilet paper
- For when we had to go to the bathroom on hikes or car rides
- Travel tumbler for coffee so you don’t have to buy it at a coffee shop every time
- One pair of jeans and one “cute” top
- Small baggies for food
- Especially if you’re roadtripping, we made a lot of lunches to go, so putting foods in little bags would have been really helpful.
Breckin:
- Cute clothes aren’t really that necessary
Hannah:
- Instant coffee
- Quick dry towel
- Long sleeve athletic tops
- Lots of small bags
- For laundry, groceries, hiking, shoes, etc.
