Experience the enchantment of Rothenburg, a charming German town enveloped by medieval castles, rolling hills, and a storied past. During my recent visit, I was captivated by the kaleidoscope of colors that adorn each unique house and building, creating a visual symphony of pastel shades. As you explore, you’ll also discover the town’s protective wall, a testament to its historical significance. To make the most of your trip, here are the top must-see attractions and best things to do in Rothenburg.

Roam the Streets
My favorite thing about Rothenburg is the sheer amount of COLOR! Each of the antique houses and buildings are painted blue, pink, green, and everything in between. The pastels are breathtaking. My favorite part about visiting Rothenburg was exploring the streets and getting lost in the twists and turns of a completely walled in city! Be sure to set aside plenty of time to discover every corner of this little town.

Climb and Explore the City Wall
The wall that surrounds the entire city truly is a sight to be hold. Every nook and cranny holds a secret, and the names of thousands of people are carved into the wall. You can climb up one of the many staircases and walk a long ways around the city on this structure! It’s easy and super fun.

Tour of the City
I’m not usually one for a guided tour, as I like to explore on my own. However, I highly recommend this guided tour with the hilarious and brilliant guides! The tour guide is a picture of the historical night watchman who roamed the streets to watch for fires and guard the city. You learn about the small details of the city, the wall, the churches, and so much more. Click here to learn more and buy tickets.

Eat a Snowball
One of the most well-known (and well-loved) treats in Rothenburg is a pastry called a snowball. It’s a mix between funnel cake and a donut covered in powdered sugar and other German wonderfulness. It is 100% a must-try while spending time in the walled city!

Climb the City Hall Tower
You can only see so much on a tour or a walk around the city. Climbing the City Hall Tower is a must! Winding around a twisty staircase can be a bit of a mission, but the views at the tip are breathtaking! A small fee (around 2 euros) must be paid in cash at the top of the tower, but it is absolutely worth it.

Eat at Zur Höll Tavern
This tavern has you feeling like you were whisked away into the past with authentic German food and drink. In the middle of a beautiful street, I stumbled upon this restaurant and had one of the best meals of my life! On the menu is different types of German breads, sausages, beers, meats, and more!

Medieval Crime Museum
For a bit of a contrast from the bright colors of the Rothenburg, head over to the Crime and Punishment museum where you can dive into some history and check out some torture chambers, the history of law in Germany, and so much more! Click here to find out more information about tickets, and click here if you want to book a tour of the museum! The upside of a tour is that you get to learn SO much more information from a hilarious and interactive guide!
Church of St. James
Explore this Gothic church that is filled with famous and incredible art as well as the world-famous Holy Blood Altar created by Germany’s most famous woodcarver. The stained glass windows and breathtaking interior is a sight to behold! The outside of the church and the two huge spires are the highest points in the entire city! This famous church is a spot you can’t miss in Rothenburg.

Lastly
One of the best things about Rothenburg is what lays outside the city. Surrounded by rolling hills, ancient castles and churches, and bright green forests, take a few extra days and explore the countryside!

One more thought before you go… Rothenburg is incredible, but you really don’t need more than two or three days at the most! Dive deep for a day and a half, and then continue your European adventure!
