A few tips before you head out! Due to all of the incredible churches and cathedrals in Zagreb that you will (hopefully!) be visiting, be sure to wear clothes that cover your shoulders and knees! Otherwise, some places will not let you in. Also, I’m not a fan of long websites with tons of information. Too overwhelming! So I condensed everything down to the bare minimum in this post to help you out! Enjoy!

At the time I am writing this, the Cathedral is currently under construction and has been for quite some time due to earthquakes in Croatia. However, if you’re reading this post-construction, be sure to give it a visit!

Visit Ban Jelačić Square

This is the main square in Zagreb! It is a bustling center full of trams, markets, and sometimes even festivals! It’s a central spot of the city and a great place to start your day in Zagreb.

Explore Tkalčićeva Street and the Upper Town

Tkalčićeva Street is a fun pedestrian zone filled with cafes, bars, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to relax, people-watch, and soak in the lively atmosphere. In the evenings, the street comes alive with music and the chatter of locals and tourists alike. The Upper Town, or Gornji Grad, is the historic heart of Zagreb. Wander through its narrow, cobbled streets and discover landmarks like St. Mark’s Church with its colorful tiled roof, the Croatian Parliament building, and the iconic Lotrščak Tower. Don’t miss the daily firing of the Gric cannon at noon from the tower, a tradition dating back to the 19th century. This part of Zagreb is beautiful; it feels like a step back in time mixed with very neat German architecture! I really loved the shapes of the buildings and all of the EPIC good eats this area had to offer!

Wander Through the Dolac Market

Located just a stone’s throw from the main square, Dolac Market is the place to experience Zagreb’s vibrant market culture. Here, you can find fresh produce, local cheeses, cured meats, and handmade crafts. The market is a great spot to sample Croatian specialties and pick up souvenirs.

Tolkien House

If you’re a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien and his many books, you’ve got to stop by the famous Tolkien House! With dragons on the tables and Elvish writing on the door, this was perhaps my favorite place in all of Zagreb.

Three in One: 2 churches and 1 museum!

All three of these places are on the same street by the watchtower, so its easy to hit all three!

Tunel Gric

This was a very random discovery. As I was walking around Zagreb, I stumbled upon this random tunnel. So, obviously, I had to explore! It was basically this long tunnel covered in art and weird little mechanical things. There is simply no way to explain it. So weird. Anyways, you definitely need to go check it out!

Three Random Good Eats To Close!

Kata: I bring this up for my gluten free fellows. Most places in Europe (such as Italy, France, etc.) don’t bother the gluten free stomachs of my family and friends. However, Croatia didn’t seem to catch the hint! But Kata is a really great deli/bakery with all gluten free food!

Basta: This another great spot to eat! My friends who studied abroad in Zagreb (yes guys here is your shoutout) ate here three times in less than a week!

Heritage: Another spot recommended by friends (who, again, insisted upon their shoutout). Go check it out.
